Road Burner: A slick K1100 RS from Powerbrick

BMW K1100 RS cafe racer by Powerbrick

In the mid 90s , the K1100 RS sat at the top of the BMW range. It was the sport tourer par excellence, at home on the autobahns and interstates. A fully-loaded RS would be nudging 600 pounds on the scales, but that mattered less than its ability to cruise at triple-digit speeds all day long.

Fast forward thirty years, and there are much better machines than the Reisesport (travel sport) for long haul mile-munching. But the K1100 has good bones, and the inline four engine, laid over on its side, has both torque and power to spare. Which makes it an excellent choice for a custom bike, especially if the heavy fairing is starting to show battle scars.

BMW K1100 RS cafe racer by Powerbrick

This spectacular café racer is one of the sharpest K1100 builds we’ve seen, and suggests that the platform is coming of age in the custom scene.

The man behind the machine is Tim Somers—the founder of the Dutch BMW parts specialist Powerbrick. Tim made his debut on these pages last week, when we featured the R9T he built with his compatriot Arjan van den Boom.

BMW K1100 RS cafe racer by Powerbrick

This solo effort is very different to Cloud 9, but just as appealing, with stripped-down visuals matched to clever engineering. Tim’s background is industrial design, and he’s gone to town on this K1100—using CNC machining for the aluminum and stainless-steel parts, and 3D printing for the front and rear bodywork.

“The visual lines were my main focus,” he tells us. “I wanted to build a bike that made sense from every direction, with the main line being the top curve—running from the front of the Koso Thunderbolt headlight over the tank to the rear cowl.”

BMW K1100 RS cafe racer by Powerbrick

“It makes the bike ‘low’ and gives it an aggressive stance.” That stance is accentuated by the swingarm, which has been extended by 15 mm (about 5/8”) despite the complexity of the Paralever design.

The swingarm is hooked up to a YSS G-Racing monoshock, which has adjustable hi-low speed compression as well as the usual range of knobs to twiddle. It’s flanked by Powerbrick’s own rearsets, milled from aluminum.

BMW K1100 RS cafe racer by Powerbrick

The front end has been completely overhauled, with S1000RR forks using Wilbers lower stanchions and Bitubo cartridges. The forks are attached using Powerbrick’s own triple tree kit, crafted from aluminum, and anodised in black. It’s fitted with adjustable steering stops and an insert for the Motogadget motoscope mini digital instrument.

The clip-ons are furnished with Motogadget bar-end indicators and Biltwell grips, and Tim has also installed a Brembo RCS19 brake master to feed the Brembo HPK GP4-RS monobloc radial front calipers and Serie Oro discs. They’re connected by Venhill brake lines.

BMW K1100 RS cafe racer by Powerbrick

The K1100 RS engine pumps out around 100 hp in stock form, but Tim has boosted this with DNA air filters, new ignition parts from NGK, and top-spec Bosch EV14 injectors. He’s also ported the intakes to get more air entering the engine, and slightly advanced the timing.

He’s also grafted on a free-flowing stainless steel exhaust system: a 4-into-1 layout terminated with a stubby muffler. And temperatures are kept in check by an aluminum radiator from RC Racing, plumbed in with Samco silicone hoses. Power is now an estimated 130 hp.

BMW K1100 RS cafe racer by Powerbrick

Tim has kept the heavily scalloped standard tank but ditched the rest of the bodywork—which must have saved more than a few pounds of weight. A new subframe keeps the lines tight and provides a connecting point for the revised monoshock arrangement.

Under the hood, there’s a new electrical system wired up to a Motogadget mo.unit blue box which can be controlled via Bluetooth. There’s also a NOCO lithium battery with a discreet Ctek charging point alongside.

BMW K1100 RS cafe racer by Powerbrick

If all this butters your toast, you’ll be glad to know that the K1100 is for sale. Tim will even include a Ctek charger, and swap out the Pirelli Diablo Rain race tires for road legal rubber.

Twisted Fate: Ex-Police BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer

BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer

When it appeared in 1991, the BMW K1100LT had the largest engine ever fitted into a BMW motorcycle, a 1092cc inline four that produced nearly 100 horsepower and 80 ft-lbs of torque. Like all of the K-series “Flying Bricks,” the engine was laid on its side in the frame, with the head on the bike’s left and the crank on the right, meaning only one 90° turn was required to transmit power to the rear wheel, minimizing drivetrain loss.

BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer

The bike became one of the most popular models for the Iron Butt Rally, in which riders travel 11,000+ miles in 11 days, and the preferred machine of legendary endurance rider Dave Swisher:

“The K1100LT is the only bike my friend, Dave Swisher the “million mile man” (actually 1.6 and counting), will ride. He sells them off after they hit 350,000 miles and usually they’re still in good shape.” –Mike, BMW MOA

BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer

The K1100LT was also a popular choice for police departments around the world, particularly Australia’s NSW Police Force, where they were equipped with sirens, red/blue strobe lights fore and aft, baton, and custom laser radar guns.

BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer

Enter Scott of Melbourne, Australia’s Twisted Fate Builds, an electrician by trade who’s been passionate about all things two-wheeled since his childhood days on a little Honda Z50R. For several years, he’d been interested in transforming a standard road bike into a cafe racer, but couldn’t quite pull the trigger on the project…

“As usual there was a lot of talking over the years and not much doing Until one day my beautiful wife got sick of the talk and forced me to call about a ex-police 1994 BMW K1100LT I’d had my eye on.”

BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer

Soon, Scott had the bike in pieces on his garage floor, wondering what the hell he’d done! But he grabbed his shop manual, fired up Youtube, found an awesome community of builders in cyberspace, and got to work. He was especially inspired by a couple of builders we’ve featured here on BikeBound, Arizona’s Trevor Ditson (@ditstang) and the UK’s Paul Fill (Kustom Moto), but he’s a created a Flying Brick all his own, with sleek lines and minimalist accessories that serve to showcase the massive inline-four powerplant.

BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer

The project ended up running a little over a year, mainly nights and weekends, but it was well worth the effort, not just for the stunning end product but for the incredible community Scott found along the way:

“I got there in the end and made a lot of great friends from all over the world along the way that will no doubt last a long time after the builds are complete…”

BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer

Below, we get the full story on the build from Scott himself, as well as more gorgeous shots from photographer Alex Jovanovic (@fstylephoto).

BMW K1100 Cafe Racer: Builder Interview

BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer

• Please tell us a bit about yourself, your history with motorcycles, and your workshop.

Hi there, Scott aka @twistedfate_builds, an electrician by day based in Melbourne, Australia. I’ve had a passion for all things two-wheeled since my first bike, a Honda Z50R, as a youngster, but of course as you grow older the bikes got bigger until I could finally get my motorcycle licence and buy my first road bike and have never looked back since! I’ve always had a fascination with cafe racer builds and really wanted to have a go at transforming a standard road bike into one — as usual there was a lot of talking over the years and not much doing Until one day my beautiful wife got sick of the talk and forced me to call about a ex-police 1994 BMW K1100LT I’d had my eye on.

BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer

Next thing I knew I had purchased the bike and it was already in pieces on my garage floor with me thinking what the hell have I done! The build was a side project that ran a little over a year made up of some nights after work and weekends when I could. I was really happy with the outcome — so much so I decided to buy another extremely neglected ex-police 1983 R100RT virtually as the K build came to an end, which I am now almost halfway through!

I’ve had an absolute blast learning so much on the build and doing things I never thought I would even attempt, but with a workshop manual in hand, youtube, and a ton of questions to the awesome community of builders in cyberspace, I got there in the end and made a lot of great friends from all over the world along the way that will no doubt last a long time after the builds are complete…

BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer

• What’s the make, model, and year of the bike?

1994 BMW K1100LT ex Australian police issue.

BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer

• Why was this bike built?

This was solely a personal project for myself. Now into my second build, I’m sort of hooked and can see more coming, so I guess at some point I will have to part with some along the way.

BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer

• What was the design concept and what influenced the build?

I have always loved the rawness of cafe racers and bobbers…virtually anything naked for that matter My main influences on this build came from bikes I used to drool over on Instagram from the likes of @ditstang, @kustom_moto to name a couple. These builds just really appealed to what my vision for the build was.

BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer

• What custom work was done to the bike?

The whole bike was torn down with every part (except the wheels, tank, and frame that I outsourced) polished or painted by myself. Where I could, I tried to use any OEM parts simply refreshed or modified in a unique way like the footpeg plates I sourced from a K100 and cut down/polished.

BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer

I always loved the Motogadget Motoscope pro dash and found a top yoke to accommodate it, which I wired in to the OEM harness after I stripped it of all unused cables.

BMW K1100 Cafe Racer

The subframe was shortened to accommodate the new seat, which I mounted a highsider brake/tail light in, and I designed a rear licence plate holder that was cut and bent from 8mm aluminium after I couldn’t find anything I was 100% happy with.

BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer

I loved the look of the K1200 rear wheel so much so I had to have one and routed the exhaust to the right-hand side simply to free up the view of it.

BMW K1100 Cafe Racer BMW K1100 Cafe Racer

Brakes were stripped, painted and new discs, pads and custom HEL brake lines fitted and was able to polish up a hidden gem in the OEM brass front brake splitter I mounted to the new guard brace.

BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer

The rear got an upgrade to its suspension in the form of a YSS Topline shock and lighting came from a Koso thunderbolt LED headlight (love the super thin profile) and a combo of Highsider and Kellerman turn signals.

BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer BMW K1100 Cafe Racer

Cooling was upgraded with a high performance low profile SPAL puller fan I retrofitted into the OEM shroud.

BMW K1100LT Cafe Racer BMW K1100 Cafe Racer

• Does the bike have a nickname?

BMW K1100 Cafe Racer

• Can you tell us what it’s like to ride this bike?

It’s actually a joy! A lot more power than I had expected and handles quite nicely — I just have to get used to the reduced handling and braking after having a BMW S1000RR as my daily ride for the past 7 years! She gets a lot of looks and double looks which I’m not sure is a good or bad thing

BMW K1100 Cafe Racer BMW K1100 Cafe Racer

• Was there anything done during this build that you are particularly proud of?

Believe it or not it’s that the wiring actually worked although that should have been a given being an electrician by trade, maybe it was the added pressure! Nutting out a hack for the OEM H20 sensor to play nice with the Motoscope Pro dash! Or passing our strict roadworthy regulations. But most of all that I have a build that pretty much reflects exactly what I had envisioned from the start!

Kings of Queens – HellGate K1100 LT

New York City is arguably the planets most influential style and culture mecca. Whatever you’re into you’re sure to find a community of New Yorkers who share that passion. This of course extends to the cities motorcycling community where you’ll find a thriving cafe racer scene.

For custom workshops to make their mark in NYC they need to be at the top of their game – and there’s no better way to prove it than to build a bike of their own. A motorcycle that has not been influenced or affected by a customer’s requests or budget. The pièce de résistance of their two wheeled portfolio.

K1100 LT cafe racer

In NYC’s largest borough, Queens, sitting in the shadow of the Hell Gate Bridge in Astoria you’ll find the workshop of Anthony LoGalbo and Nick Rovello. Now in its second year of operation, the aptly named HellGate Moto specialises in cafe racers built using BMW airhead and K-bike donors.

After putting in the hard yards establishing their business the time to build something for themselves finally arrived. But 1 bike for 2 owners simply didn’t make sense. So rather than compromise, they have created 2 bespoke Bavarian cafe racers.

This bike, which is based on a ’95 BMW K1100 LT is Anthony LoGalbo’s personal steed. It was designed and built from the frame up by Anthony, Nick and a handful of skilled builders from within the NYC custom motorcycle community.

Hellgate BMW K1100

“The concept for the bike began with a traditional Cafe Racer design. Removal of all but the most necessary components,” says Anthony. “We believe that the beauty of the BMW K1100 LT is in the bones of the bike: its frame, fuel tank and engine. Therefore, minimalism is at the centre of this bike’s design.”

Once the K1100 LT was torn down attention was focused on improvements to the chassis. Starting with the rear end they removed the ability to carry a passenger in favour of tighter proportions. Brooklyn’s Tim Harney Motorcycles completed the fabrication work which involved the addition of a plug welded custom made rear loop. Redundant tabs and mounts were also dispensed with and all evidence of their existence machined away. For a stiffer setup and more consistent look, the frames stamped steel cross-member has been cut away and a tubular steel alternative welded in place. The whole assembly was also stripped bare before it received a fresh coat of gloss black powder coat.

Hellgate BMW K1100

The thoroughly cleaned and freshly painted inline-four looks as fresh as the day it rolled out of BMW Motorrad’s Berlin plant, but there was a lot more work put into it than a simple aesthetic overhaul. During the comprehensive rebuild, a transmission swap was performed for better urban gearing. To freshen things up internally they installed new seals and gaskets and gave the bikes drive shaft a complete overhaul.

As for power, they’ve bumped the output to well above the factory 100hp rating. This was done by deleting the airbox and installing velocity stacks, retrofitting shortened K100 headers and mounting a Twisted Brothers Tig Welded Stainless Steel Muffler. The new exhaust system features hidden O2 sensor hardware for a clean finish and exits under the belly of the bike where the centre stand previously sat. Everything was of course re-installed using top quality stainless fasteners.

“Deleting the airbox opened previously covered portions of the bike’s frame and accentuates the 41mm billet aluminium velocity stacks,” Anthony points out. “The visual weight of the bike was transferred down to the iconic ‘Flying Brick’ engine, a signature of the K-bike line.”

Hellgate BMW K1100

Any increase in power should always be accompanied by improvements to handling and brakes and HellGate Moto hasn’t cut any corners here.

Taking pride of place on the rear end is an Öhlins Type 4 Rear Shock with External Piggy-Back Reservoir. It offers complete adjustability via a remote hydraulic spring pre-loader which sits in a custom bracket mounted to the frame. A key element of this build for Anthony was retaining the original front end for a period-correct appearance. So to ensure they were up to the task the K1100 LT forks were fully rebuilt. For a clean finish, the forks sit in a machined billet top clamp that’s been anodised black and fitted with a flush-mounted Motogadget Motoscope Mini digital gauge.

For improved braking performance the bike is running EBC pads and cross-drilled rotors. The lines are all custom made stainless Venhill items and the callipers and master cylinder have all been meticulously rebuilt. As for the wheel and tire package, the bike now wears matching 17-inch rims lifted from a K1100 RS. The rebuilt rims are wrapped in aggressive looking Bridgestone Battlax AdventureCross Scrambler AX41S rubber.

K1100 LT cafe racer

Transforming a K1100 LT tourer into a naked cafe racer meant replacing most of the bike’s standard bodywork. The best-looking part of the whole K1100 package is without question the fuel tank, which is why Anthony chose to retain it. To complement the angular lines of the tank he’s installed a Twisted Brothers fibreglass tail unit and black leather seat. A 3D printed rear fender protects the battery from road grime and the tank wears a power brick pin-lock alloy cap.
